Jail

We haven’t had a real call in a while.

Last night, we started off by going over some more details on a couple of street fights, like the one at Sherwood Park. Then Charlie said that in 1978, a member of the police department pulled him over and told him that all the cops in town pretty much had it out for him, and that he needed to start laying low. Apparently all of these fights had earned Charlie quite a reputation around town – especially with the Odessa Police Department.

We’re starting to wonder if his reputation is what eventually connected him to Carmen’s murder in the first place. Someone in an official police position would have had to call the radio station in order for them to run the news story that Charlie had been arrested and was in jail for the murder. The only problem is that Ector County was covering the murder case – not the city police in Odessa.

I asked Charlie how many times he’s been arrested. Let’s just say that the number is more than a few.

Sometimes he was arrested simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time – like when some guy broke into his office and Charlie tried to hold him down until the police showed up. He spent a day and a half in jail for that, charged with assault.

Charlie just hated authority in his younger days. It’s as simple as that.

The question is, how much did that authority hate him?

Say a prayer for me,

K. E.
